By Klaus Thymann
A hybrid is the creation of something by combining two very different elements.
In the year 2007 the pervasive nature of popular culture has begun normalising the ethnographic uniqueness of cultural hybrids. Today, developing sub-cultures are scarcely given a chance to materialise before they become over-exposed fixtures in mainstream pop-culture. The acceleration of media and cultural consumption leaves little time for sub-cultures to develop, instead micro-pockets of hybrid-cultures emerge.
Hybrids explores the white areas on the cultural map through images of:
TALL BIKE JOUSTING, SNOW POLO, A GAY RODEO, A RELIGIOUS THEME PARK, UNDERWATER STRIPTEASE, UNDERGROUND ARTIFICIAL GARDENING, HIP HOP IN CHINA, AN INDOOR BEACH, HOMELESS FOOTBALL WORLD CUP, MOTORCROSS BULLFIGHTING, RAVE AS RELIGION and TECHNO HIPPIES AT BURNING MAN.
This sociological documentation (shot from 2003 to 2007) explores a wide variety of cultural phenomena and portrays an extraordinary range of contemporary individuals. Photographed in destinations such as Santiago de Chile, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Beijing, Miami, New York, St. Moritz, Cape Town, Madrid and Amsterdam, this image storm is composed of shots from all over the globe. Despite their disparate origins, the subjects in the book are all hybrids.
